Sergeant Major Alvin J. Chaplin
Sergeant Major Alvin J. Chaplin hails from St. Helena Islands, South Carolina. He entered military service in September 1986. After completing Basic Training at Fort Dix, NJ, and Chaplain Assistant Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Monmouth, NJ, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC.
Prior to assuming duties as the Chaplain Corps Regimental Sergeant Major in the Office of the Chief of Chaplains, SGM Chaplin was the Command Sergeants Major, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, United States Army North. He also served as the FORSCOM Chaplain SGM; Department of the Army Chaplain 3/5/7 SGM, Washington, DC. He served in various leadership positions to include interim First Sergeant. SGM Chaplin’s career and experiences include assignments with: Multi-National Forces-Iraq; Multi-National Corps-Iraq; United States Army Intelligence and Security Command; Joint Forces Headquarters-National Capital Region; 1st Armored Division and 26th Area Support Group in Germany. He also served at the United States Army Chaplain Center and School (USACHCS), Fort Jackson, SC; the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, LA; a tour in Seoul, Korea; and at the Home of the Airborne with the XVIII ABN Corps Chaplain Office.
SGM Chaplin has completed all levels of the Noncommissioned Officer Education System. He is a member of Class 56 of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. He has also completed the Command Sergeants Major Development Course, Pre-command course, Combat Development Course, Force Structure and Organization Course, Master Fitness Trainer Course, Advance Airborne and Airborne School and Air Assault School.
SGM Chaplin served two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, in addition to other deployments in Operation Desert Shield and Storm, Operation Restore Hope and Operation Hurricane Andrew. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (1OLC); Bronze Star Medal (1OLC); Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Oak Leaf Cluster); Joint Service Commendation Medal; Army Commendation Medal (6th OLC); Joint Service Achievement Medal; Army Achievement Medal (3rd OLC); Joint Meritorious Service Unit Award; Valorous Unit Award; Army Superior Unit Award; and numerous service ribbons, including the Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, German Parachutist Badge, and Drivers Badge. He is also a member of the Honorable Order of Titus.
SGM Chaplin is married to the former Kontrina A. Shaw. They have three children and five grandchildren.
